Seva (Punjabi: ਸੇਵਾ) or selfless service is an act which is performed without any expectation of result or award for the person performing it.
Serasana participates in seva throughout the year to numerous clients in need and also to local and national charities.
The Phoenix Center is a local organization that is especially close to our hearts. As a founding board member, Serasana and its Affiliate, Sana Vida, are deeply devoted to their cause of providing mental health services to At-Risk-Youth. They incorporate yoga therapy into their list of services for the children. Many of Sana Vida’s team members, families and clients have been involved by donating money regularly, serving as loyal board members and working with the children directly.
Each one of the Sana Vida therapists and instructors give of their time every year by doing pro-bono work for clients in need and as they donate their professional service for fundraisers by many non-profit organizations.
While donating services may be performed with the core intention of helping others, there is also a common wisdom that those who give of themselves also receive. Over the past two decades there has been a growing body of research that indicates volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social benefits. This research has established a strong relationship between volunteering and health: those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer. Now that’s a win-win situation!
